Course Overall Objective

The Certificate in Project Management (Built Environment) programme aims to introduce and explore the concepts and practices of project management in relation to the built environment. The objectives of the Certificate in Project Management (Built Environment) are:

  • to develop the learner’s understanding of the role and various tasks of a project manager within the context of the building industry.
  • to enable the learner to apply a range of project management techniques in a project within the context of the building industry.

Course Format

  • Virtual: 10 x 1.5 hours classes online using zoom run on Thursdays from 8.15 -9.45pm
  • In House: 5 x 3 hours workshops on campus run on Saturdays from 10-1pm
  • Location: Griffith College Dublin, South Circular Road, Dublin 8

Course Prerequisites

 The minimum entry requirements are that applicants must hold a minimum of a Level 7 QQI qualification, or equivalent according to the National Framework of Qualifications.

Applicants who are over the age of 23 may apply on the basis of previous work experience and a demonstration of commitment to further education.

Applicants from countries where English is not the first language will also be required to provide evidence of sufficient English language abilities.

Course Content

The Certificate in Project Management (Built Environment) consists of two modules taught over two semesters.

  • Project Management – Tools and Technique (10 ECTS)
  • Project Management – Planning and Control (10 ECTS)

Semester 1         Project Management – Tools and Technique (10 ECTS)  

This module provides learners with the means to understand the role and various tasks of a project manager within the building industry. The module also develops learners awareness of the skills and competencies required within the project team. Skills developed through the module bring leadership and direction to projects allowing learners to fully appreciate the challenges organisations face in dynamic and changing built environments. Project management creates and enables motivated teams who know their work is valued, so to optimise their performance. Project management enables teams to ensure the deliverables are correct and there is a real return on investment.

Semester 2         Project Management – Planning and Control, (10 ECTS) 

The module enables the learner to apply a range of project management techniques in a project within the context of the building industry. Skills covered in the module facilitates the project management process, and ensures that proper expectations are set in relation to time, cost, quality and client requirements. The module assists in the identification and mitigation of risk and ensures that proper project processes are established and followed in the project lifecycle.

Who should attend this training

Mature learners over 23 years of age, with a background from building design and construction-related programmes or a cognate discipline or relevant work experience from the built environment looking to upskill and specialise in project management relating to the built environment.
