Course Overall Aim or Objective

The Certificate in Conservation, Sustainability and Adaptive Reuse programme aims to introduce and explore the concepts and practices of conservation and sustainability in relation to the Built environment as well as Planning and Building Control. The objectives of the CCSAR are:

  • Enable the learner to understand conservation as a specialist element and incorporate this concept in their project work as appropriate. The module content supports the learner’s capability in making informed choices concerning the most current conservation strategies for projects, and understand the requirement for the external specialised knowledge on the project. Learners will also critically understand how to formulate a conservation condition survey and report.
  • Enable the learner to understand sustainability as a necessary element within the built environment and implement this concept in their project work.
  • Enable the learner to consider basic design requirements imbedded in the building regulations; to introduce health & safety requirements, focusing in particular on risk assessments. It aims to ensure the learner has an understanding of role and responsibilities within a project, and introduces the ideas of professionalism, liability, negligence and the client/designer relationship. The learner is given an understanding of the legal frameworks regulating built environment. In addition, they are introduced to the principles of business management and provide a basic knowledge of how a small practice operates.

Who should attend this training

Mature learners over 23 years of age, with a background from building design and construction-related programmes or a cognate discipline or relevant work experience from the built environment looking to upskill and specialise in conservation, sustainability and adaptive reuse.

This programme is a level 8 programme for graduates from cognate level 7 degree programmes, or equivalent.

Course Content

The Diploma in Conservation, Sustainability and Adaptive Reuse programme consists of 6 modules, taught over two semesters, with modules in semester 2 being linked to successful completion of semester 1. The semester 1 modules taught consist of the following:

  • Conservation I (10 ECTS)
  • Sustainability I (10 ECTS)
  • Planning and Building Control (10 ECTS)

Conservation I (10 ECTS)

This module develops learners understanding of conservation as a specialist element, and facilitates their incorporation of this concept in their project work as appropriate. The module supports the learner’s capability to make informed choices concerning the most current conservation strategies for specific projects, and understand one’s own limitations and the requirement to engage external specialised knowledge on a project. Learners will also develop the ability to formulate a conservation condition survey and report.

Sustainability I (10 ECTS)

This module enables the learner to understand sustainability as a necessary element within the built environment and implement this concept in their project work. Learners are introduced to the concept of ‘sustainability’ and its role in the design, construction and use of the built environment. The concept is further developed to consider the wider context of climate change, energy sources and efficiencies, the circular economy, reduce/reuse/recycle strategies, and environmental ethics. Learners are encouraged to embrace sustainable design within the context of current legislation and regulations.

Planning and Building Control (10 ECTS)

This module provides learners with an overview of the legal and statutory and associated requirements relevant to the built environment. While Irish law is the main context for the module, many aspects of European law are highlighted and discussed throughout, as relevant to the sector. Thus learners are provided with a comprehensive overview of the important aspects of law which affect building industry businesses in operation in Ireland and the European Union.
