Dates for the first three lectures are Thursday 17th February, Thursday 10th March, and Thursday 14th April.
Lecture 1:
Topic 1 will provide an introduction to various regulatory and statutory issues that interior designers and their clients may need to be aware of, and how they relate to a project. These can apply to a range of project types and scales, ranging from relatively small-scale domestic projects to larger commercial fit outs and refurbishment.
Content:
Overview & Intro to: Building regulations, Planning Act, Health and Safety Act
Case study of attic conversion to illustrate application of building regulations, planning, health and safety requirements
Lecture 2:
Topic 2 covers slip ratings for floors, and a more detailed overview of basic compliance requirements for stairs, handrails, ramps and guardrails. Dimensions and formatting requirements for stairs can be a significant compliance issue for redesigning an interior.
Content:
Slip resistance: rating systems used, overview of testing methodologies, overview of ratings required for interiors
Overview of TGD Part K: Stairway, ladders, ramps and guards – key requirements for stairs
Lecture 3:
This topic aims to provide a more detailed review of Health and Safety legislation and the Project Supervisors required to be appointed by the client, the responsibility of the interior designer under these regulations, and information that may need to be passed on to Project Supervisors
Content:
Health and Safety: Client responsibilities & Designer Responsibilities; Design Risk Assessment; Appointment of project supervisors to oversee and coordinate safety; Health and Safety Plan
