Length of the Programme: 3 Week Course, Biophilic Design, 3 x 2 5 -hour sessions
Biophilic design is an essential addition to an Interior designer’s tool kit, transforming spaces to provide clients with opportunities to live and work in healthier environments.
Research shows Biophilic design can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, enhance creativity while improving our health and well-being, as the world population continues to urbanize, these qualities are ever more important.
In this introductory course explore the world of Biophilic design and learn practical solutions to enhance your projects and create healthier, more stimulating interiors for your clients.

This series is aimed at interior designers, architects, facilities managers, and design students who want to expand their design toolkit. This course will explain Biophilic design and the benefits of implementing its elements and principles into the built environment.
Course overview
Week1: Introduction – What is Biophilia and Biophilic design? – exploring its history, definitions, and what are the benefits of using this human-centric design ethos.
Week 2: Biophilia in context, the Biophilic hypothesis, and the Nature-Health connection and mind-body systems.
Week 3: Exploring the 3 categories of Biophilic design & the basics of the 14 patterns and planning for its implementation.

This course will be delivered by Jackie Tyrrell of Jackie Tyrrell Design.
Jackie Tyrrell is an award-winning interior designer and runs her design studio since 2005, her experience embraces Interior design, graphic design, product branding and production design, specialising in Biophilic design.
She has had the opportunity throughout her career to work on some amazing projects, both nationally and internationally, including the Irish visit of his holiness the 14th Dalai lama to both Dublin and Derry, the Special Olympics Ireland exhibition in the European Parliament and multiple events and projects in the Irish National Stud, to name a few.
Jackie held the positions of course coordinator and senior lecturer in Interior design at the Dublin Institute of Design, for eight years. She holds a diploma from the internationally acclaimed Rhodec Design School in Interior Design, was awarded an Honours Degree in Interior and Furniture Design from the Dublin Institute of Technology, and completed her Master’s in Professional Practice with Technological University Dublin.
Jackie is an advocate for Biophilic design, writing articles in Anthology magazine and being interviewed by Dermot Bannon for the Inside Out Home show, she also completed her Master’s thesis on Biophilic design, focusing on the health and economic benefits of adopting its principles and elements into an office environment, post-pandemic.
